Saba Food Hub

Building a community owned, values-driven food supply chain

What is the Saba Food Hub?

We connect small California BIPOC farmers to institutions and corner stores through a community-owned, values-driven food supply chain. At the center of this system is the Saba Food Hub, the operational heart of Saba Grocers Initiative. From our warehouse in Oakland’s historic Produce Market Terminal, we source, store, pack, and deliver seasonal California produce directly from small, BIPOC-owned farms to institutions and corner stores in historically excluded neighborhoods where fresh food is urgently needed.

How it works

Source

We aggregate from our network of small, BIPOC California farms.

Hub

Cold storage + packing to order at our Oakland warehouse.

Deliver

Reliable, temperature‑controlled routes across California.

Reinvest

Revenue from institutional sales helps subsidize final-mile delivery and keep produce affordable at corner stores.

Who We Serve

  • Institutions: including food banks, schools, hospitals, grocers, workplaces; consistent volumes, flexible packs, values‑aligned sourcing

  • Corner Stores: small, customized orders + Fresh incentives that make produce affordable in neighborhoods historically excluded from corporate supply chains.

  • Farms: fair, reliable purchasing from small and BIPOC‑owned growers; fewer barriers to reaching urban markets.

Ownership & Governance

Shared ownership for shared prosperity.

We build “communities of care” by engaging farmers, store clerks/owners, and resident leaders, the people who grow, sell, and eat the food. Together, they guide what we stock, how we deliver, and how families access produce every week.

Thus, our next chapter introduces a community ownership model: 51% nonprofit (Saba) and 49% shared among three stakeholder groups: farmers, store clerks/owners, and resident leaders/ambassadors. Stakeholders will participate in governance, training, and decision‑making so value circulates where it’s created.
